Our journey through time

Discover the rich history of the Graham Island East Coast Farmers Institute, from its founding over a century ago to its present-day role in nurturing the agricultural heart of Haida Gwaii.

Over the century of service and growth

The Graham Island East Coast Farmers Institute has a proud history dating back to its establishment on May 23, 1912. Over the decades, we have celebrated significant milestones, including receiving a prestigious Century Award from the BC Provincial Government on August 3, 2014, recognizing over 100 years of dedicated service. Our commitment to community and agriculture has also led to the initiation of key local events, such as the Tlell Fall Fair in 1982 and the Tlell Farmers Market in 2008, both of which continue to thrive and support local producers.

Supporting the heart of Haida Gwaii agriculture

For over a century, the Institute has been a steadfast voice for the agricultural community on Haida Gwaii. We have actively supported local farmers by facilitating bulk purchasing, fostering equipment sharing, and encouraging collaboration. Our ongoing mission is to help the agricultural communities grow and prosper. The driving force behind our continued success and impact remains our dedicated membership, whose passion and involvement sustain our efforts.

Cultivating the future together

Building on our rich history, the Graham Island East Coast Farmers Institute looks forward to a future of continued growth and support for islanders. We are committed to bringing education, conducting research, and developing programs that benefit the community and improve rural life. Our goal is to ensure settlements thrive and prosper. We are constantly evolving, always ready to provide support to those who seek and need it.

"

Supporting local food sources in remote regions is an integral part of creating a thriving community. By working together, the producers on Graham Island are able to share knowledge and ensure local and high-quality food on Haida Gwaii for generations to come.”

“I encourage everyone to participate in the Annual Tlell Fall Fair to learn more about agriculture and the Tlell Farmers Market to support local producers.”
